We have a friend who’s part of a women’s roller derby league (she’s on The Trampires in the Dockyard Derby Dames league out of Tacoma, Washington) but we haven’t been able to attend one of her bouts…that changed this last weekend. We finally had the pleasure to attend and I was given a media pass to photograph the bout! OMG, so so so much fun let me tell ya, I had an absolute blast (it’s a shame that was the last game of the season) and can’t wait till next season. 🙂
Lessons learned…bring my 24-70mm f/2.8L lens along with the White Whale (the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II). I brought the 50mm f/1.2L with me but hardly used it at all. I was’t sure if flash was allowed so I only brought one strobe with me. Well, it’s allowed so perhaps next time I will bring more and set them up on stands around the track…that could be interesting!
Thank you to The Trampires for a wonderful first time bout, it was so much fun!!
…Enjoy!

Wonderful shots. Great compositions. Great energy!
This looks kinda rough. Great shots, David. 🙂
Next time see if you can bring a sidekick! I’d love to shoot some derby!
I actually hadn’t heard of Roller Derby until today when I was reading an article about Physical Education in school and now i read your post with images showing me what it is. Sounds like an interesting sport,, although I wonder what the rules are.
