f/8 | 7 bracket HDR | iso 100 | Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM @ 17mm
This week’s theme over at The Daily Post is: “Sea. What kind of emotions does the sea or ocean make you feel? Do you remember the first time you went in the water? Had a wave crash on you? Felt the sand burn your feet? Do you feel more peaceful around water? Do you hate the beach? What’s the most interesting thing about the sea for you?”
I took this image one foggy morning last month while in Seattle, this is the water taxi launch/pier/dock/whateveryouwanttocallit place. To answer a few of the questions, yes, I do feel more at peace when near the sea/ocean. I love the sea/ocean, just don’t enjoy swimming in it (damn you Jaws) and perhaps the thing I love the most is the smell (yes, even though I dislike the taste of fish, love the smell of the sea/ocean)!
The image is a 7 bracket HDR (basically 7 shots combined taking the best exposures from each). I also added my beloved muted colour process by adding a B&W layer then lowering the opacity of that layer to allow colour to bleed through (I lowered the opacity more than usual as it just didn’t look right). Hope you enjoy…oh, can you believe I actually got a shot of a bird and it stood still for all 7 shots!! I really should have bought a lottery ticket that day eh! For those who don’t know, birds hate me with a passion. They see me coming and fly away…seriously dislike me!
…Enjoy!

Great shot, and really nice processing.
Those gulls can be pretty possessive of a good perch. I had a similar experience last year shooting brackets, long exposure brackets. The head swivelled, but the rest was all nicely lined up and it worked really well. I think they are hopeful of a food offering and want to stay as close as possible to the food source.
I think you hit it right on the nose w/the food! I was just happy he decided to sit so still for me, almost thought perhaps my dealings with birds might have changed (it didn’t)! 😀
Well! Was it the Natal Anti Shark Board visits when you were a wee lad that did it for you or the fact that you watch Shark Week every year? Scared the heck out of me this year.
Well, to be honest…I think a little of both! I would agree, I think this year’s Shark Week was a little more…gruesome than most. 😀
The seagull makes the shot. You were truly blessed that day!
I will agree, the seagull really does make the shot! Thanks for the comment.

I like looking at beach but I hate going on it, sand is my enemy!!!!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Lucy, greatly appreciated! There’s just something so beautiful watching the waves coming ashore, I can totally appreciate your comment about looking at a beach! 😀
Perfect shot, David! Love the muted color. And that seagull on top of the boat is a great addition to the scene. Well done! Maybe the birds are starting to like you 😉
Thanks Gracie, however, I don’t think they are starting to like me. Perhaps he/she just didn’t see me? 😀
