It’s been on my short list for awhile, so this weekend I decided to get out there and do it, take another shot of myself!
It was close to sundown when I took this so had to use two strobes, the first using a Canon 430 EX II shot at 1/2 power through a softbox (looking down on me) camera right. The second Canon 430 EX II shot at full power camera left (through a softbox) to help illuminate the area immediately behind me. Both Speedlites were on manual and triggered using Cactus V5 transceivers. Taken with my Canon 5dm2, in the image is my Canon 7d with the awesome 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM. Location was, of course, at Northern State Hospital. 😀
…Enjoy!

Hi David! Nice to see you. Very nice self-portrait of you in a great setting. 🙂
What a great self portrait! I love the intriguing location and your composition incredibly. And you did a fabulous job with the lighting as well. Great work!
Thank you so very much Martina, greatly appreciated!
Great to catch a glimpse of you David. Kind of like coming out of the closet or something. I don’t even use my name. The idea of using a self portrait never occured to me. Not likely to happen either. I wish I had that lens to play with.
Lol, I bought the lens for my 40th birthday (we only turn 40 once right)! 😀
We do. Sadly.
I can’t really afford a lens like that. But I can afford old manual lenses and just got a Nikkor-N 24mm f2.4 which I took out for the first time today on my Canon. I love it already. Drooling over some old 300mm Nikon and Takumar lenses that are for sale in town. Gave them a test run today and am still analysing the results.
So good to see you, David! And a nice location to shoot a self-portrait. 🙂
Thank you Nandini, this is certainly one of my all time fav places to shoot!
Nice shot great background but Jeepers you are talking in a foreign language to me 😉 The 2/3rds rule works though !
🙂 Thank you very much Hellen, your comment is greatly appreciated!
Nice work on the lighting. Had you not mentioned it I would’ve thought it was natural light. There are reflections on the 70-200 but I wouldn’t have noticed…
Thank you very much Michael, that’s a great compliment. 😀
Nice self portrait, Dave. Love the background you included as it really captures the “explorer” type of photography. O’ the places we will go.
O’ the places we will go indeed! Thank you Brandon.
You know, you look like some actor I’ve seen in a movie. I don’t remember the name. But yes, nice to meet you!
I really like the photo too. The blue of the jeans really stands out and draws your attention in
There is a poker player named David Williams, however, I don’t think we look alike at all! 😀 Thank you for the comment.
Nice to meet you!
Why thank you! 😀
It is so nice to see the photographer who I love his photographs… Nice to meet you once again dear David. This is great shot of yourself… You seem so serious,… but the ambience where you sit is making a nice background, everything is being address to camera or to the photography… In your eyes, in your looking way, I see only photography…. The moment of the camera… Thank you, with my love, nia
Thank you so very much for your kind words Nia, it’s greatly appreciated! My eyes do look a little serious don’t they…hmmm, something to work on. 😀
You are wellcome dear David. Actually I wanted to make point in this, I mean you are busy with this moment as you said, something in your eyes to work on… My English language sometimes is being poor to express myself… You didn’t give a pose to your own camera, you are still working there by looking at the camera 🙂
So you look serious… Thank you dear David, with my love, nia
Lol, thank you Nia. You totally brought a smile to my face. 😀
Nice to see the creative artist behind all those great shots. Your portrait is awesome, what a great backdrop. Wonder what might be on the “long list?”. 🙂
Thank you very much Martina! How I dislike self portraits…suppose it’s needed though. 😀
